Mary-Louise Hooper with Monty Naicker at the Treason Trial. Naicker was one of 156 people who were tried. Naicker twice served as President of the South African Indian Congress and was a key figure in the Congress Alliance which included the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Indian Congress. Hooper, an American Quaker, worked as an assistant to African National Congress President Albert Luthuli, who was also a defendant in the Treason Trial. Hooper was forced by the South African government to leave the country in 1957 and she returned to the United States where she continued her anti-apartheid activity working for the American Committee on Africa.
