The Anti-Apartheid Coalition of Tennessee (ACT) marched to the center of the University of Tennessee campus on January 25, 1989 to protest UT’s investments in companies operating in South Africa. Soon after this march, the Student Government Association formed a committee to speak with University officials on this topic. In an open forum the following month, UT administrators reiterated their policy of investing in companies that have signed the Sullivan Principles. ACT members built a shantytown on campus before the April meeting of the Board of Trustees and then met with the Board, which decided not to change their investment policy.
