The Chicago Committee for a Free Africa was founded about 1977 as the Chicago Chapter of the Organizing Committee for a New African Liberation Support Committee. In February 1978 it left the Organizing Committee for a New African Liberation Support Committee and became the New Chicago African Liberation Support Committee. In September 1978 it changed its name to the Chicago Committee for a Free Africa. The organization was involved in the campaign to get Northwestern University to divest from companies doing business in South Africa and a campaign against the sale of the South African gold coin the Krugerrand by Chicago banks.
