The New World Coalition was a progressive, largely educational group that opposed U.S. intervention in Third World countries and also was concerned about women's rights, gay rights, the draft, and other issues. In January 1978, the Coalition sponsored the Maine Conference on Southern Africa, which included speakers from the Patriotic Front for the liberation of Zimbabwe and the American Friends Service Committee. A leader of the New World Coalition was one of two students on Colby College’s Committee on Investment Responsibility, where he advocated for total divestment. From 1978-1985, this group led the Trustees’ policy of divesting only from U.S. companies that did not comply with the Sullivan Principles. On October 11, 1985, 250 people participated in a rally as part of the National Anti-Apartheid Day; a petition campaign calling for full divestment was also being circulated at that time.
