Black Alumni Advocating Divestment (BAAD) joined the protest against Pennsylvania State University’s policy on divesting from companies operating in South Africa in March 1987. The Black alumni group argued that the publicity about the administration’s position on South Africa was reducing Black student recruitment, at a time when Penn State was under pressure to increase Black student enrollment. The Black Alumni Advocating Divestment also communicated with legislators, some of whom were discussing appropriations for Penn State in light of its position on divestment as well as a bill introduced by Rep. David Richardson that would require any university receiving state funds to divest from companies operating in South Africa.
