GW Voices for a Free South Africa was a student group that campaigned to get George Washington University to divest from companies doing business in South Africa. As part of its protests, it built shanties on campus. During 1985, the group participated in at least two demonstrations at the South African embassy and one at the White House along with people from other campuses in the area. The group worked with other groups on the George Washington University campus, including the Black People's Union and the Progressive Student Union; GW Voices also was part of DC Student Coalition Against Apartheid and Racism (SCAR).
