Artists Against Apartheid was founded on February 1, 1986 by Jerry Dammers, Dali Tambo (son of ANC President Oliver Tambo) and Chandra Sekar following a meeting in late 1985 in the office of the Anti-Apartheid Movement in London to discuss coordinating artistic support for the 10th anniversary of the Soweto protests (also known as the Soweto Uprising) in June 1976. The official launch was at Donmar Warehouse on April 22, 1986 and was attended many musicians, including Bob Geldof and Midge Ure of Band Aid and was also supported by the United State organization Artists United Against Apartheid.
