In 1983 the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was formed by the merger of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (UPCUSA) and the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS). In 1979 General Assembly of the UPCUSA established a Task Force on Southern Africa to co-ordinate the programs and concerns of the church regarding racism, colonialism and apartheid in Southern Africa. UPCUSA and after the merger the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was a sponsor of the Washington Office on Africa (WOA).
