The United States Committee of the International Defense and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (US-IDAF) was established in 1972. The International Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (IDAF) was founded in 1964 in the United Kingdom to seek peaceful and constructive solutions to the problems created by racial oppression in Southern Africa. It grew out of the Defence & Aid Fund, set up in South Africa in 1952 in response to the clampdown on the Defiance Campaign, and the subsequent ad hoc committees that were formed in Britain and South Africa to raise funds for legal defense and humanitarian aid for victims of injustice, including political prisoners, banned persons, and their families, as well as to document and publicize conditions prevailing in Southern Africa. In addition to raising funds for legal defense of prisoners and aid for their dependents, US- IDAF also disseminated information about conditions in Southern Africa, supported boycotts and other solidarity actions, and distributed the literature published by IDAF in London. It published IDAF News Notes, edited by Geoffrey Wisner, from 1982-1989. Kenneth N. Carstens was the Executive Director of the US-IDAF and initiated the establishment of the Canadian IDAF.
