Formed in the mid-1970s as Northern California Interfaith Committee on Corporate Responsibility it was initially modeled after the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility in New York. The name was changed first to the California Nevada Interfaith Committee on Corporate Responsibility and later in the 1980s to CANICCOR Research. Its support comes primarily from U.S. church entities. Because of its expertise about banking, CANICCOR became focused on South Africa at the time of the 1985 South African debt standstill. CANICCOR wrote "South Africa's Debt at the Time of Crisis" in 1986, which giving estimates of the exposure to South Africa of every major bank in the world. John Lind of CANICCOR testified before the Banking Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives in August 1989 on the rescheduling of South Africa's debt and in February 1990 on legislation to prevent U.S. bank lending to South Africa. In 1987, South Africa's debt was rescheduled until 1990, and CANICCOR focused on Europe with the support of the Presbyterian and Lutheran Churches. CANICCOR sent letters to the major German and Swiss banks on behalf of these U.S. churches in 1988. In 1988, CANICCOR staff member David Koistinen wrote "South Africa's Gold and Diamond Trade," which showed that most of the South African gold was traded through Switzerland, the UK and Belgium. Following the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990 and a fact finding trip by John Lind to South Africa in 1991, CANICCOR ended its work on South Africa.
