The Southern Africa Support Coalition of Massachusetts (SASCOM) helped to coordinate the anti-apartheid efforts of a variety of Boston-area organizations. It met regularly and included representatives from Boston Mobilization for Survival, Free South Africa Movement, Haymarket People’s Fund, and other groups. In September 1985 member organizations were the African National Congress (ANC), Boston; the Boston Coalition for the Liberation of Southern Africa; Mass Divest; the Springfield Coalition to End Apartheid; and Transafrica, Boston. SASCOM supported the liberation movements in South Africa and Namibia, the ANC and the South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO). SASCOM was co-chaired by Margaret Burnham and Themba Vilakazi.
