I though you would find the enclosed Washington Post clip interesting. The reporter did a good job in quoting our views. Focusing on U.S. Focusing on U.S. policy for Africa, we continue to insist on a human rights agenda even while working for a broader set of policies to facilitate sustainable economic development for Africa. So in January, I prepared a memo for the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ special Summit meeting on Africa outlining how they could most effectively impact on President Clinton’s Africa agenda and things that should emerge from has March Africa trip. I’ve enclosed the Executive Summary. In February, I met with Jesse Jackson, now the President’s Special Envoy to Africa, on the eve of his trip to Africa to urge he proactively support the democratic force in the three countries he would visit – Kenya, Liberia and Congo. The memorandum includes a memorandum to Honorable Wellington Webb, Mayor, Chair, United States Conference of Mayors Advisory Board and Task Force on Sub-Saharan Africa. The memorandum includes a reprint of a newspaper article: “Jackson Urges Reconciliation in Liberia, U.S. Democracy Envoy Concludes Africa Tour”.
