Occidental College students, alumni, and faculty will gather at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12 to construct shanties at what is being called Biko Commons. Building the shanties is being organized by the Occidental Anti-Apartheid Coalition, coinciding with the last meeting between students, faculty, and Occidental’s Board of Trustees on May 13 at 6:00 p.m. The Coalition has scheduled a protest and vigil outside that meeting at 5:45. The following morning, students and faculty will hold a teach-in to address the college community about the results of the Trustee meeting. “South Africa & Divestment” a talk given by Prof. Clare Robertson of Ohio University’s African Studies Program will begin a weeklong education drive on Monday afternoon. On Friday night, the Black Student Alliance will sponsor a party at their off-campus house, and, on Saturday, Upward Bound students will visit Biko Commons.
