Los Angeles, California, United States
Spring 1986
Six students are sitting in front of a shanty made mostly from wooden packing materials on a greenspace in front of a building on the campus of Occidental College. One woman has a blanket over her lap; one man is reading a paper. Banners hanging above the shanty read “AZANIA WILL BE FREE” and “Divest now!” Students on many U.S. campuses built shanties to represent how Black people in South Africa lived.
