Kenyan independence leader Tom Mboya (right) and Senator Hubert H. Humphrey. Mboya was on a visit to the United States organized by the American Committee on Africa (ACOA). At the time, Kenya was a colony of the United Kingdom. Kenya became independent on December 12, 1963.
