The press release says Unity in Action (U.I.A.), an anti-apartheid coalition, had called into question Mr. Manilow’s April, 1983 performance in South Africa and was set to demonstrate against the artist at each of the Thursday through Sunday performances. Barry Manilow considers it his duty not to appear again in racist South Africa as long as “apartheid is in force,” according to a September 26 statement requested from the entertainer by U.I.A. Unity in Action accepted Manilow’s pledge of support of the cultural boycott and forwarded his statement to the United Nations, African National Congress, and key anti-apartheid forces.
