New York, New York, United States
June 1996
Hafsat Abiola speaks at press conference in New York about the assassination of her mother, Kudirat Abiola, in Lagos on June 4, 1996. Kudirat Abiola was the wife of Moshood Abiola, who was imprisoned by the Nigerian Government; he was the winning candidate in elections in Nigeria in 1993. At Hafsat Abiola's shoulder is Wyatt Tee Walker, pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem and President of the American Committee on Africa. Next to Walker, with his hands folded in front of him, is New York Council member Wendell Foster, a civil rights leader and the first Black American elected to the New York Council from the Bronx.
