The New York City Council voted on October 30, 1997 to approve this sign to be placed at the corner across from the Nigerian consultate. The Africa Fund and the community-based United Committee To Save Nigeria had campaigned for this recognition of democracy activist Kudirat Abiola, who was killed on a street in Lagos in 1996 while her husband, President-elect Moshood Abiola, was imprisoned.
