Activists holding the street sign for Kudiral Abiola Corner, to be installed across the street from the Nigerian consulate. Jennifer Davis, Executive Director of The Africa Fund, is holding the sign; former New York City Mayor David Denkins is behind her. The corner was named to honor Nigerian democracy activist Kudirat Abiola, who was killed on a street in Lagos in 1996 while her husband, President-elect Moshood Abiola, was imprisoned. The New York City Council voted to approve this sign on October 30, 1997 in response to a campaign by The Africa Fund and the community-based United Committee To Save Nigeria.
