Western Massachusetts Dennis Brutus Defense Committee; Glenn Ruga
Amherst, Massachusetts, United States
Late 1981 or early 1982
Poster created to raise funds for the defense of Dennis Brutus and to keep him from being deported from the United States. A poem by Brutus, “I am the exile,” appears in white text on the left side of the poster. The background of the poster is dark, filled with part of a large black face. A single eye appears; the eyeball contains a startling red image of a person shouting. The face in the background is created from a photograph of Mokubung Nkomo, who was the Amherst Coordinator of the Western Massachusetts Dennis Brutus Defense Committee (DBDC). The poster was designed by Glenn Ruga and printed by Newell Printing in Amherst, Massachusetts. Size: 24.75 x 17.25 inches.
