Sign above the entrance to the Tower Records store in the Upper East Side, which reads: "Tower vs Apartheid - Unlock South Africa Apartheid's Jails by Donating Your Key in the Receptacle Inside Tower." At a press conference on September 18, 1987 organized by the American Committee on Africa, the "Unlock Apartheid's Jails" campaign was launched with Bill Cosby and the mayors of New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, Washington, and Kansas City. It also was announced that Tower Records would place displays for the campaign in 60 stores across the country.
