September 1960
Students from East Africa on a chartered plane en route to Idlewild Airport in New York City from Kenya in September 1960. Earlier in 1960, the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation gave $100,000 to the African American Students Foundation, which paid for three charted flights from Kenya to bring students from East and Central Africa, mostly from Kenya, to use scholarships at U.S. colleges and universities. The chartered flights became known as the "airlift." These flights occurred before Kenya became independent in December 1963.
