United Nations Centre against Apartheid
New York, New York, United States
1986 or 1987?
Poster marking the International Day of Solidarity with the Struggling People of South Africa. The United Nations General Assembly, in a resolution adopted November 9, 1976, designated June 16, the anniversary of the Soweto massacre in South Africa on June 16, 1976, as an annual day of commemoration, which continued until the end of apartheid. The poster contains a group of five iconic black and white photographs of protest and police brutality on that day, on a light gray background. At the top of the poster, the light gray blends into a monochromatic picture of a large crowd of protesting young people. This poster could have been produced in any year from 1977 through the 1980s.
