Elias Motsoaledi was a lifelong member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the African National Congress (ANC). He was one of the eight defendants in the Rivonia Trial (including Nelson Mandela) and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released in 1989 after having served 26 years.
