The Southern Africa Liberation Committee (SALC) received a prize from the Peace Education Center, a community group in East Lansing, for SALC's "McGoff Off" campaign. John McGoff's name was on the main stage at the Michigan State University (MSU) Wharton Center because of a $1,000,000 gift for the performing arts center. McGoff had secretly received millions of dollars from the South African government's Department of Information to buy a major U.S. newspaper.
