In the mid-1970s there was a big increase in the number of detainees tortured to death by the South African security police. In 1977 Steve Biko was the 46th detainee known to have died in police custody. This poster is one of a set of three designed for the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) by David King.
Joseph Mdluli was detained by the South African police on March 19, 1976. Within 14 hours he was dead. 17 other opponents of apartheid died in mysterious circumstances during the following 18 months while being held in detention without trial.
