Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers at the first Conference on Public Investment and South Africa held in New York, organized by the American Committee on Africa. In 1980, Senator Chambers introduced to the Nebraska Legislature the first anti-apartheid legislation to be adopted by any state. Chambers had learned that several thousand dollars worth of Krugerrands had been donated to the University of Nebraska. The bill Chambers introduced reduced the state's budget allocation to the University by the value of the Krugerrands.
