Western Sahara
March 1979
A Polisario soldier holds up an empty case of mortars that the United States sold to Morocco. Morocco was using arms supplied by the U.S. in Western Sahara although the U.S. did not recognize Western Sahara as being part of Morocco. The photograph was taken by Richard Knight when he visited Western Sahara and the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria on behalf of the American Committee on Africa. Copies of this and other photographs showing the use of U.S. supplied arms in Western Sahara were given to members of Congress.
