The Attica Brigade protested against the presence of recruiters for Gulf Oil Company on the Columbia University campus. The protest was part of a national campaign against Gulf for exploiting oil in Angola which was then a colony of Portugal. Gulf's payments to the Portuguese government provided a large part of Portugal's military budget needed to maintain its African colonies.
