Bill Cosby at the press conference launching the Unlock Apartheid's Jails campaign. In June 1986, the South African government imposed a state of emergency in an attempt to crush rising black opposition. At least 30,000 people were detained in apartheid's jails over the following year. Cosby, Honorary Chair of the Unlock Apartheid's Jails campaign, was joined at the press conference by the mayors of eight major U.S. cities and Ambassador Joseph Garba of Nigeria, chairman of the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid.
