The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) organized a picket of the ship the South African Pioneer on Pier 6 at the Brooklyn docks. The ship was carrying goods from South Africa. George Houser, Executive Director of ACOA, is in the middle with a sign reading "American Oppose Apartheid." Brooklyn longshoremen, members of Local 1814 of the International Longshoremen's Association, had respected the picket line for two days. On the third day, the South African Pioneer was unloaded.
