Agostinho Neto became president of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) in 1962 and was the first President of the Republic of Angola (1975-79). Neto also was a poet, publishing his first collection of poems in 1948. The line "Liberty in our eyes" is from the poem, "Western Civilization." This poem, translated by A. Segel, appears in Africa Today, Vol. 17 (July – August 1970), p. 39. Size: 16.5 x 22 inches.
