Rally against the Southern Company opposing the importation of coal from South Africa

Almost 1,000 people took part in a rally and picket at the annual stockholders meeting of the Southern Company to oppose importation of coal from South Africa. The Southern Company, a holding company that owned Georgia Power Company, Alabama Power Company, Mississippi Power Company, and Gulf Power Company, had signed a contract to import two million tons of coal from South Africa over three years. The first shipment was scheduled to arrive in mid-July and be burned at power stations in Florida. Many of those attending were rank and file members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), particularly from District 20. Also attending the rally, one of the largest in Alabama in the decade, were people from various community organizations. There was two hours of picketing followed by a rally.
