Union Theological Seminary students protest against First National City Bank

Bruce Tischler, a student at Union Theological Seminary (UTS), carrying placard during demonstration outside the National Council of Churches building (475 Riverside Drive, New York, New York) against bank loans by First National City Bank to South Africa. In March 1967 students at UTS demanded that First National City Bank close its three offices in South Africa. This photograph is apparently a picket of the Methodist Board of Missions in protest of the Board's depositing its accounts at First National City City Bank. The students charged that the Board indirectly supports the economy of South Africa by having funds in a bank with extensive investments and financial arrangements there. The students presented Board President Bishop Roy H. Short with a petition to withdraw if funds from the bank. The photo is on the cover of The Christian Century which had an article "Institutions, Investments and Integrity" by Charles W. Powers and Jon P. Gunnemann.
