Guinea-Bissau
April 1974
Stephanie Urdang, a member of the Southern Africa Committee, traveled in the liberated areas of Guinea-Bissau with the PAIGC, which led the armed struggle for independence from Portuguese colonialism, in April-May 1974. Here she speaks with Mario Ribeira, her translator. The PAIGC had declared independence from Portugal in September 1973. While Urdang was in Guinea-Bissau there was a coup in Portugal. The new Portuguese government recognized Guinea-Bissau as independent in September 1974. Urdang later wrote Fighting Two Colonialisms: Women in Guinea-Bissau (New York: Monthly Review Press, 1979, ISBN: 0853455112)
