Seen here (from left) is Mozambique Foreign Minister Joaquim Chissano, an unidentified man, Bill Sutherland (AFSC), Lyle Tatum (AFSC) and an unidentified man. Chissano, a founding member of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), played a leading role in the liberation struggle and was named Foreign Minister when Mozambique became independent in 1975. He became President on Mozambique in 1986 following the death of President Samora Machel. Sutherland served as Southern Africa representative of AFSC from 1975-1982 based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
