From left to right: Manilal Gandhi with Rev. John Haynes Holmes and Rev. Donald Szantho Harrington of the Community Church of New York. Manilal Gandhi was an active opponent of apartheid. Holmes had discovered Mohandas Gandhi, Manilal's father, in 1918 and promoted Gandhi's spirit of active nonviolence. Harrington became a founder of the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) in 1953 and ACOA's first office was in the Community Church.
