Georgia State Senator Julian Bond gave the keynote addressed at the first Conference on Public Investment and South Africa in New York. The conference brought together state legislators and anti-apartheid activists from around the country to devise strategies to enact divestment legislation. Over the next few years more than half the states and 90 cities adopted divestment or other actions against companies doing business in apartheid South Africa.
