At 2:30 AM on April 3, 1986, police moved onto the University of California-Berkeley campus and began tearing down shanties. Over 170 activists were arrested in two days of protest. Students on college campuses across the U.S. built shanties to dramatize the living conditions of blacks under apartheid and to demand divestment of college endowments from companies doing business in South Africa.
