Mr. and Mrs. Manilal Gandhi at Phoenix Settlement, Natal, South Africa, September 1954. Phoenix Settlement was founded by Manilal's father, Mahatma Gandhi, in 1904. The first civil disobedience campaign against racial restrictions on Indians were planned there. Manilal left South Africa for India with his father in 1914. Manilal returned to Phoenix Settlement in 1916 to carry on his fathers work, including editing the journal Indian Opinion.
