Demonstration at Chase Manhattan Bank's main office in lower Manhattan because of the banks loans to apartheid South Africa. Some 700 member of Students for a Democratic South Africa (SDS), Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), Students for Peace and the National Student Christian Federation picketed from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. A few days before the demonstration Chase sought to enjoin SDS and allied organizations from demonstrating or sitting-in not only on Chase property but also on adjoining streets. SDS lawyers were able to limit the scope of the injunction to bank property only. Midway through the demonstration a delegation met with a member of Chase's board who rejected demonstrators demands that the bank cease making loans to the South African government. The delegation returned to the picket line and minutes later spearheaded a sit-in at one of the doors of the bank. All who committed civil disobedience were arrested and later released on their own recognizance. That same day demonstrations protesting American business involvement in apartheid took place across the country. All were initiated by SDS co-sponsored by civil rights, peace and other student groups. Photo reproduced from South Africa Bulletin.
