On March 8 1994, American women leaders gathered on Capitol Hill to applaud the release of the South African Women's Charter for Effective Equality. Participants represented 26 organizations, including the YWCA, National Council of Jewish Women, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, American Association of University Women, AME Church, Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), Women's Empowerment and Development Organization, Institute for International Education, and grass roots anti-apartheid groups such as the Southern Africa Support Project.
