Leaflet advertising an event on August 27 at the Institute of Industrial Relations in Berkeley with a video, "NAMIBIA Africa's Last Colony," and presentation on "MINER'S STRIKES AND THE LABOR MOVEMENT IN NAMIBIA." People in the U.S. labor movement should support brothers and sisters who belong to the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the other labor and freedom organizations in South Africa by stopping South African trade from entering and leaving the ports of San Francisco and Oakland. In late 1984, members of International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 10 refused to unload ships containing South African goods that had entered San Francisco. Organized tabor has worked to continue the efforts of Local 10 through a special labor committee sponsored jointly by the Bay Area Free South Africa Movement and the San Francisco Anti-Apartheid Committee. Recently, this committee helped organize a coalition of unions, churches, and minority community organizations to force SeaLand Corp., the largest container service in the port of Oakland, to stop shipping South African cargo through the port. The coalition not only caught SeaLand in the act of transshipping the cargo, but organized a rally and negative publicity that convinced SeaLand executives to pledge in writing to no longer use the port for that purpose.
