Text of a statement issued by the Bay Area Coalition for Sanctions calling on Senator Pete Wilson (R-Calif) to support S 507. California's electorate has demonstrated its support for sanctions against South Africa - divestment ordinances have been passed by local governments across the state, and even signed by the Republican state administration. People across the country will commemorate Soweto Day on June 16 by renewing the struggle for divestment from, and sanctions against, South Africa. The Coalition will circulate petitions, sign cards, and wear buttons to show support for the people of South Africa by supporting sanctions, as they have repeatedly requested. The House version of the bill, HR 21, has already twice passed the House of Representatives. Rep. Ronald V. Dellums has introduced bills for nearly two decades calling for complete divestment of U.S. economic interests in South Africa, a total embargo on South Africa, and requiring the administration to support international sanctions in the United Nations. In California, the Coalition will commence its lobbying of Senator Wilson with a rally at his San Francisco office to call on him to stand with Bishop Tutu and Rev. Boesak to cease economic support for a regime that oppresses the vast majority of its people solely on the basis of their race.
