Mailing from Rob Jones, American Committee on Africa (ACOA); Vera Michelson, Capitol District Coalition against Apartheid and Racism; and Pamella Saffer, New Haven Free South Africa Coalition, following a conference in a New Haven in September 1988 of 300 activists from the northeast to discuss building a southern Africa solidarity network of trade unions, church groups, community organizations, anti-apartheid groups, peace activists, and students. In March 1989, a follow-up meeting in New York City laid the groundwork for continuing the network. There is unanimous agreement that a network is needed, so the Northeast Southern Africa Solidarity Network has been formed, representing the 12 states from Maine to Washington, D.C. An Interim Coordinating Committee met in April in Washington, D.C., and will meet again on June 24 in Philadelphia. Three Network campaigns are: support for the Dellums Comprehensive Sanctions Bill (S.507) at all levels of government; the Shell Boycott; and a "Dollars for Democracy in Namibia Campaign," a material aid drive in support of SWAPO during this crucial electoral period. The funds collected will be turned over to SWAPO to be used for resettlement of almost 100,000 refugees, voter registration training, transportation to remote parts of Namibia for electoral work, printing of voter education materials, medical supplies, etc. The mailing mentions the Shell Education Project, Ann Werboff, the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR), the Religious Action Network, the Africa Office of the National Council of Churches, Soweto Day Activities, the Call to Action for the Children of South Africa, a June 16 Soweto Day Rally for Sanctions, Senator D'Amato, Mobil Oil Company, a Cultural Rally for Sanctions, Sechaba, Serious Business, Peter Yarrow, and the Washington Office on Africa (WOA).
