The document makes the case for boycotting Gulf Oil Corporation because of its strategically significant support for Portuguese colonial rule in southern Africa. More than 150,000 Portuguese soldiers are fighting in Guinea-Bissau, Angola, and Mozambique in an effort to subdue the ten-year-old African military thrust for freedom and determination. The United States has not sent troops to support the governments in this trouble spot, but U.S. corporation are supporting and thus possibly prolonging the wars. The Gulf Oil Corporation is by far the largest U.S. investor in Portuguese Africa; in 1972 alone, it contributed $50 million towards the Portuguese war effort. Portugal is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Without Gulf and other companies that provide Portugal with foreign exchange, Portugal would be forced out of Africa. Black people in the U.S. are organizing a Gulf Boycott which is now effective in 20 states. The boycott is aimed at stopping the imperialistic attack on Africans who are fighting for their independence.
