Coordinated state-wide leafletting of Bank of America (BofA) branches, common Days of Concern, anti-apartheid and reinvestment conferences, and promotionals for shareholder resolutions calling for disinvestment. 1978: South Africa Catalyst Project unites students and faculty on all UC campuses and several private universities in activities calling for divestment of university funds. Davis, CA, voters pass the nation's first referendum demanding removal of city funds from financial institutions making loans to South Africa and calling for reinvestment of these funds to solve problems of jobs, housing, and crime. 1979: California Campuses United Against Apartheid (CUAA) is established. April 1, 1979: State-wide Day of Concern for South Africa celebrated by 375 congregations. International Day of Withdrawal - 66 BofA branches leafleted in 20 California cities. 1980: January 26: Associated Students of the University of California dedicate their Ninth Annual Legislative Conference to South Africa divestment. 1981: Stockholder resolutions at Wells Fargo Bank and Crocker National Bank annual meetings. 1982: $top Banking on Apartheid produces "Our Town Out of South Africa." 1985: Large rally in San Francisco protests tourism promotion by the South African Tourism Board and South African Airways. 1986: The United Church of Christ Northern California Conference becomes the first judicatory to invite a representative of the African National Congress (ANC) to visit its congregations on an official mission. Bank of America, the nation's second largest bank, announces that it will make no more loans to South Africa. July 9: The Oakland City Council unanimously declared the city a refuge for South Africans, Haitians, Guatemalans and Salvadorians. October 31: Church Consultation on Responsible Use of Money in a Troubled World. San Francisco Council of Churches launches "Kids for Kids South Africa Christmas Aid Drive" to collect clothing, toys and funds for South African children living at ANC refugee camp in Tanzania. The document also mentions the Northern Californian Ecumenical Council, the California League of Cities, boycott of Shell Oil products, and the State Assembly.
