The press release says the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) has reported to the United Nations Sanctions Committee that the S.S. Mormacove, a Moore-McCormack vessel under U.S. registry, has arrived in the U.S. on its third sanctions-breaking trip since April. The Mormacove is carrying nickel cathodes from Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and its port of exportation is Durban, South Africa. Twenty metric tons of cathodes are consigned to Phillip Brothers, an Engelhard subsidiary, and about 60 tons to Wolverine Metals. ACOA pointed out that the Journal of Commerce for October 18 reported a weakness in nickel cathode prices and ample supply. The International Longshoremen's Association will refuse to unload the contraband metal when the ship docks at Dundalk Marine Terminal, Baltimore on October 19, according to William Haile, president of the Baltimore District Council of the ILA (AFL-CIO). ILA President Thomas W. Gleason supports this action. The ILA has cooperated with ACOA in trying to research vessels with Rhodesian cargo due in U.S. ports. Rank and file black and white workers in Baltimore locals that might be called upon to unload the Mormacove are agreed to uphold sanctions and refuse to aid the racist Rhodesian regime.
