The brochure, with a photograph of Dennis Brutus on the cover, includes an update on bis campaign for political asylum by Professor Jan Carey, Co-Convenor of the Dennis Brutus Defense Committee (DBDC). The State Department will soon render its advisory opinion on Brutus' application for political asylum in the United States, after which the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) will set a hearing date at which an Immigration Judge will pronounce his right to political asylum. Because of his relentless opposition to apartheid, if Dennis Brutus, internationally acclaimed poet, scholar, and human rights advocate, loses the right to asylum, his life will be placed in serious jeopardy. If he deported to Zimbabwe, Brutus will be in danger at the hands of the South African Secret Police, which operates in that country. If he is deported to South Africa, he will be immediately jailed under the terms of an exit permit he was required to sign upon being exiled by the South African government. The Reagan-Crocker policy of coddling up to the minority apartheid regime of South Africa is the "silent" motivation behind Dennis Brutus' possible deportation. The brochure includes the poem "Somehow We Survive" by Dennis Brutus and a quotation by Senator Howard M. Metzenbaum. It also has a reply form to the DBDC.
