The protests were triggered by the arrests and detentions of 21 Black South African labor leaders by the racist Apartheid government and increased government repression against thousands of Black, Asian and "colored" South Africans who have been holding mass demonstrations against that country's new constitution. South African Black political and trade union leaders recently expressed support and solidarity with the Free South Africa Movement demonstrations and arrests in Washington.
